Anime Review: Grimgar of Fantasy & Ash

For today’s post I wanted to do a review on a recent anime I’ve just completed as it’s still fresh in my mind and thought it would be an interesting topic to talk about.

Oh, I’m only mentioning series one as we’re all waiting to find out if they’ll release a second series!

“Why are we here? Why are we doing this?” Before Haruhiro had realised what happened, he was surround by darkness. ‘Why was he here? Where was here?’ Even now, he still didn’t know. Those around him were the same, no one remember anything other than their own names. When they emerged from the darkness, the world that awaited them seemed like something out of a video game.

In order to survive, Haruhiro forms a party with others, learns fighting skills and as a soldier in the reserve force, takes his first steps into the world of Grimgar. What awaits him there, he doesn’t know…

Just completed the first season of Grimgar aka “Hai to Gensou no Grimgar” and I decided to watch the series as I was told the anime was similar to SAO and in my opinion the only similarity was the fact that the characters were trapped in a Game world but had no recollection of their passed or how they came to be in Grimgar.

At first I was intrigued and wanted to know more of what was going to happen to the characters in Grimgar but sadly I found the anime extremely slow and abit underwhelming at times although I fear it’s due to having high expectations as I assumed it was going to have more of a SAO feel which it didn’t in my opinion. Nevertheless it was still a really cute anime and I understand it more now I’ve completed it, I hope there is a second series that will really push the story and add in abit more action and drama as every now and then in season 1 it felt like something was about to happen yet it would either be a small triumph or nothing came of it at all.

Wavy brown hair and brown eyes, he would describe himself as “average”. His most distinctive feature are his eyes, which always look tired, even though he isn’t actually tired. Haruhiro is an awkward person at first, steadily becomes more reliable and outgoing as the story progress. He’s a bit sarcastic and cynical at times, this is more of a defence used due to his natural shyness.

Taller than Haruhiro, had pale skin, light brown hair and brown eyes. In battle, he wore a Priest Outfit that the Guild provided for him. A very caring person and a responsible leader.

Yume has pale skin, reddish brown braided hair and brown eyes. In battle she wears a Hunter outfit that the guild provided to her. Brave and energetic, Yume is the hunter of the group although she initially shows relatively little proficiency at archery, a hunter’s main weapon skill. This leads her to take up machete (or short sword) skills when she has the opportunity to train, and it seems she enjoys more success in close combat as opposed to ranged combat.

Somewhat scrawny, but appears to possess a wiry strength as a Dread Knight. He has unruly deep red-auburn hair, red/brown eyes, and a near permanent smirk or sneer on his face. The curliness of his hair becomes a running joke. According to the rest of the party members, he is a self-boasting, loud and rude member who seemingly is oblivious to his own behaviour. He has no quints in making crude comments towards the party and yet seemingly not making any serious advances. Haruhiro constantly compares him to an annoying child.

A short girl with short light purple hair and purple eyes. She constantly says that she is overweight even though the rest of party says that she is not. A passive and dismissive personality. She is shy towards strangers and has low experience communicating with the opposite gender as well.

He may look weak, but in reality he is strong enough to destroy a monster; he just doesn’t know how to use his strength properly. His appearance is a big guy, wearing silver armour, his weapon is the Big SwordMoguzo has a calm and very kind personality. He is shy most of the time especially when being praised by others. However when the situation calls for it he can be really violent and good at killing his team’s opponent

Taller than Yume and Shihoru, has pale skin with navy blue hair and blue eyes. In battle, she wears the common Priest’s outfit. (I’ll leave it at there to not spoil her character)

Thank you & credit goes to Grimgar Wikia for the character breakdown info!

-Favourite Characters-

Haruhiro, probably because he is the protagonist character and it’s easier to feel more of a connection with him. You see him grow as a character and learn new tricks as well as dealing with keeping his party together and friends close by – I feel like there should have been more of a ‘love interest’ between him and two other characters but maybe the writers will push that more in the second season!

Mary, is an interesting character as she wasn’t in the show from the start but a new character and they made her appear somewhat rude and not very friendly at all which of course put me off of her character until we discover the true meaning behind why she acts the way she does – In the end she comes out of her shell and we see a beautiful and powerful side to her as she is much stronger than the others in the party.

What’s your opinion of the anime? If you haven’t watched it, give it a try and let me know how it goes! Hope you’re all having a wonderful and beautiful day – Till next time, stay groovy ✌️

– Thank you for reading –
